Day Trips to the Ancient City of Uxmal

Located 62km south of Merida, the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal is a place of huge historical significance. It sits alongside Chichen Itza and Calakmul as one of Mexico’s three greatest archaeological sites, and gained its UNESCO World Heritage Site Inscription back in 1996. It is a must-see destination for anyone staying in the Yucatan region.

Despite sitting in modern Mexico, much of the ancient city’s huge and decorated Puuc-styled buildings remain. The typical Maya huts are characterized by smooth low walls, columns, and trapezodial shapes while the depictions of two-headed snakes represent the rain god known as Chaac.

The buildings are still connected by the ancient roads (sacbes). Whether you’re interested in learning about the Mayan history or simply wish to be blown away by the incredible architecture and surrounding views, this is a brilliant place to visit. Our day trips are organized and operated by knowledgeable, certified experts that bring the ancient stories to life for a truly fascinating experience while still allowing you to maintain a sense of independence during the visit.

Governor’s Palace, Nunnery Quadrangle, and the Pyramid of the Magician are the highlights of the city. Aside from the mindblowing experiences, due to an early arrival you’ll be sure to grab some truly incredible photographs during your visi. In truth, you probably wouldn’t have a need to spend longer than half a day exploring the ancient ruins, combined with other archaeological sites, a chocolate museum or followed by the nightly lights and sounds show, but if it was good enough for Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, it’s good enough for you.

Given that the ancient archaeological site is just over an hour away from Merida, our affordable and comfortable day trips are the ideal excursion.

Should you not stay in Merida you might consider a multi day tour which we are happy to prepare for you. We do have 3 different options, which vary from 3 to 8 days, plus there is is always the possibility to create a personalized itinerary for you.

Day Trips to the Ancient site of Kabah

Another major Puuc-style archaeological site in the Yucatan region is situated at Kabah. The Mayan site is located just 18km from Uxmal, allowing us to provide day trips to either site as well as slightly longer day tours that include visits to both venues.

While Kabah is another Mayan site and shares a number of fundamental features with Uxmal, its unique buildings and decorations give it a unique flavor. The 18km long causeway connects the two sites, and is characterized by the monumental arches at either end. Kabah was declared a Yucatan state park in 1993.

The Palace of the Masks, which depicts hundreds of Chaac impressions, is a truly incredible sight to behold. There are also several low stone step pyramids, while the palace structures in the Easy Group are particularly popular too. The ancient sculptures and monuments will impress all visitors regardless of age or interest in the Mayan history. Our tour guides are knowledgeable, passionate, and guaranteed to help you experience the true magic of the ancient site in a comfortable and safe way.

There’s a museum and other attractions to be enjoyed during your stay while the peaceful surroundings are perfect for anyone seeking a break from the city while still enjoying a productive day on their vacation or business trip. Kabah’s pillars and galleries are a treat for the eyes while the Arch of Kabah is another spot to grab truly incredible holiday snaps.

The ancient site of Kabah provides an interesting insight into Mayan history and is considered one of Mexico’s must-see attractions. Whether experienced on its own or along with the city of Uxmal is entirely up to you.

Day Trips to the Caves of Loltun

Loltun Cave is located 110km from Merida, but the journey is made worthwhile by the stunning sights that you’ll see at the ancient Mayan cave site. The name Loltun loosely translates to Flower Stone, and it truly is a place that combines beauty with human history.

The cave is roughly 2km in length, and is home to an array of paintings and sculptures that date back to at least the Late Preclassic Era. The handpainted formations give an insight into their techniques of using negative human face impressions, geometric shapes, and animal depictions. Bones have been discovered in The Huechil cavity, proving that people lived in the caves too. Frankly, every step is an adventure into a truly unique experience.

Natural formations include musical columns, a vault known as the cathedral, jaltunes. In addition to the cultural significance, the caves provide some truly stunning natural sights. This is particularly noticeable in areas where the light shines through openings to highlight the beauty fo the rock formations and inject color and vibrancy to the surroundings.

Whether you’re an explorer, looking for a romantic scenery, or interested in the history of ancient North America, the Loltun cave is an essential stop-off for anyone in the Yucatan region. These caves are having huge domes, are safe and do not have any tight, narraw passages. They are actually a great experience for the entire family.

Meanwhile, our day trips can include time in the nearby town of Oxkutzcab, where you can gain an insight into the local culture of arts and entertainment. The 20 de Noviembre market is a particular highlight.

The trip can be combined with the other Mayan adventures or enjoyed as an independent trip. Either way, the once-in-a-lifetime experience is not to be missed.
